The Brittan Scholarship

The Brittan scholarship is open to students at Masters level. This scholarship is in memory of Lord Leon Brittan who was himself the child of an immigrant and asylum-seeking family, and who had huge sympathy for people seeking an education.

The scholarship is available for students of the following subjects: International Law, Human Rights Law, International Aid, and International Business.

The scholarship, up to a maximum of £20,000, will be awarded to cover tuition fees and a small grant towards living expenses. The scholarship will be awarded to students who have a refugee or asylum seeking background.

Please make sure you meet the following criteria before applying:

  1. Location: you must be currently living in the UK.
  2. University: you must have applied, or be in the process of applying, to a master’s degree at a UK university.
  3. Immigration status: you must have an asylum seeking background (e.g. your immigration status is the result of an asylum claim in the UK).
  4. Degree course: you must be pursuing a course in international law, human rights law, international aid, or international business.

Applications for the 2026 intake will open on 27th April 2026, and close at 5pm BST on 29th May 2026. Interviews for successful candidates will be held in July 2026.

Please read our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document and Guidance Notes before beginning the online application form.
